Career opportunities

  • If you would like to find out more about becoming a Postpartum Education and Care Professional, we have a free career guide which you can download on our website here.

  • Our course is available worldwide and we have students in over 60 countries.

Postpartum care is unregulated in most countries, so technically you could start offering postpartum care services today. However, most people find that training gives them confidence, increases their skills and helps them to work within their scope. Additionally, our graduates receive a certificate of completion and badge.

Our course includes a bonus module on starting your own business and we have opportunities for our ongoing business support available to our graduates through an optional membership program.

  • We have all sorts of people who attend our course from all over the world; doulas, birth photographers, midwives, birth educators, meal delivery services and hypnobirthing practitioners to name a few.

You can use the training to enhance your existing services or provide any other service you would like - either in-home, in a class, one-on-one or online.

Additionally, you do not have to be a qualified professional to join. If you work with mums in any capacity and feel that the course is right for you, then it is!

You can listen to the stories of some of our graduates on the podcast here:

    Public health meets postpartum in-home-care

Sami Stewart (she/her/hers) is a mother, doula, public health professional, LGBTQ community member and advocate, change-maker and activist. Her practice is evidence-based, intuition-driven and community-centred. Sami launched her business "The Hold" in late 2022.

Building financial sustainability that honours your life

Charlotte is a postpartum doula, sleep-in advocate, mum, and lover of great food. Charlotte has worked alongside families for 15 years within the health and education sectors. After becoming a Mum in 2020, Charlotte decided to launch her business, kin. Charlotte offers in-home, and in-your-pocket (online) support to families.

    Gently dismantling oppressive systems

Rachael is qualified in culinary arts, and now works as a postpartum doula in Central Pennsylvania. She shares openly about her very challenging pregnancies and postpartum experiences. You'll learn about her successful business and how she has adapted her work to various situations.

  • No. In Australia, for a course to be ‘certified’, it has to be run through a Registered Training Organisation (like a University). Newborn Mothers is not a Registered Training Organisation. I’m aware that the regulations around using the word ‘certified’ are different in other countries.

You do get a Completion Certificate. Our training is an endorsed activity by the Australian College of Midwives, DONA International and the Australian Natural Therapies Association.

  • You can use what you learn in your existing work (for example as a midwife or yoga teacher) or you can start your own business (for example as a doula, offering a meal delivery service or selling online courses).

Some of my graduates work one-on-one with mothers and caregivers in their homes, some teach postpartum education classes, some run mother’s groups, some work online. You can listen to their stories on my podcast.

I’m famous for my love of business and marketing and will share the basics with you after you graduate.

  • Yes. Doulas are non-medical professionals who provide emotional, practical and informational support to new families. They do not treat, diagnose or prevent any illness, give advice or prescribe herbs or remedies. The doula industry is not regulated.

Postpartum Education and Care Professional Training will teach you everything you need to know to work within the scope of a Postpartum Doula, and teach you how to get your first clients and get paid.

  • Yes. This is one of the most comprehensive non-medical postpartum training available online and worldwide. You will uplevel your skills and knowledge and learn practical new ways of working with new families that are not available anywhere else. In my experience, doulas are lifelong learners. There is always more to learn! You may also be able to get Professional Development Points if you require them.

  • Yes. Many of our students are midwives, and some use what they learn to work within the hospital system or as independent midwives. Others start a new education or care businesses. Plus you may be able to get professional development points if you need them.

  • The World Health Organisation recognises that the postnatal period is a critical phase in the lives of mothers and newborn babies. Yet, this is the most neglected period for the provision of quality care.

In my experience, even within the field of postpartum care, basic breastfeeding, sleep and mental health knowledge is lacking. New parents recieve confusing or conflicting information. Advice is often not based on scientific evidence. It’s hardly surprising that so many families feel overwhelmed!

When information is siloed advice given to new families about sleep may sabotages their breastfeeding goals, or the person supporting a mother to breastfeed might not understand her mental health needs, and so on.

Therefore understanding how normal breastfeeding, sleep and mental health work together is an essential element of integrated postpartum care.

You’ll learn this foundational knowledge and more inside Newborn Mothers Postpartum Education and Care Professional Training.

  • Unfortunately, in most countries, there is a lack of public funding for postpartum care. It is crucial to recognise postpartum care as a fundamental human right, with strong support through public funding.

In the meantime, we strongly believe in the importance of fair compensation. It is unjust to continue building our economy on the unpaid labour of women.

For mothers who genuinely cannot afford one-on-one doula services, there are alternative ways to make a difference, such as offering informational products through blogs or social media, or participating in free or low-cost group classes. You could also consider taking on occasional pro-bono clients.

You can read more about this in our blog post Pricing your postpartum services with confidence and compassion.

  • I'm one of those people who loves public speaking! However, I am committed to not flying for work for climate reasons.

Instead, I love speaking online (live or pre-recorded) or at events at home in Western Australia. Unless you can cover my train fare to get to the Eastern States - if so, I’d love to come!

I’ve spoken at the Melbourne Midwifery Society, Australian Doula Conference, Doula Network of Australia Annual Conference, Homebirth Australia Conference, the Radiance Perinatal and Infant Mental Health Symposium and more.
